The Complete Guide to Cabinet Filler Installation for Custom-Fit Appearances

To install a cabinet filler strip, rip the filler to the width of the gap (scribing it to the wall if the wall is uneven), clamp it flush to the cabinet’s face frame, pre-drill from inside the cabinet through the face frame into the filler, and fasten it with screws short enough not to come through the front. Fillers go in as the cabinets are set, not after.

Key takeaways

  • A filler is a finished strip in the same door style and finish as the cabinets. It closes gaps that standard cabinet widths cannot, and gives doors, drawers and hardware room to open.
  • Plan fillers before you order: wall ends, inside corners and next to appliances are the usual spots. That layout is your filler plan.
  • On face-frame cabinets, fillers attach to the side of the face frame with screws driven from inside the cabinet, so no fastener shows on the front.
  • Against an out-of-plumb wall, scribe the filler to the wall instead of leaving a tapered gap or relying on caulk.

1. Understanding Cabinet Fillers

Cabinets come in standard widths, usually in 3-inch steps, but walls almost never measure out to an exact multiple. A filler takes up the difference and does three jobs:

  • Closes gaps between a cabinet and a wall, an appliance or another cabinet, so the run looks built-in.
  • Creates clearance so doors can swing fully open and drawers can pull out past a wall, window trim, an adjacent cabinet’s hardware or an appliance handle.
  • Absorbs wall irregularities, because a filler can be cut or scribed to match a wall that is out of plumb, which a finished cabinet side cannot.

Fillers are made in the same finish as the cabinets so they read as part of the face frame. In most lines they come oversized so the installer can rip them to the width the job needs.

2. Types of Cabinet Fillers

Different spots in a kitchen call for different filler pieces. Use this table to match the piece to the job.

2. Types of Cabinet Fillers
Filler type Where it goes Main purpose
Base and wall fillers (standard strips) Between a cabinet and a wall, or between two cabinets Close the gap and give doors and drawers clearance
Tall fillers Beside pantry, oven or refrigerator cabinets Match the full height of tall units
Corner fillers Inside corners of L- and U-shaped layouts Keep drawers and handles on the two walls from colliding
Overlay or decorative fillers Visible ends and feature areas Add a molded or furniture-style detail
Appliance and end panels Beside refrigerators, dishwashers and exposed cabinet ends Finish an exposed side or frame an appliance

2.1 Standard Fillers

Standard fillers are flat strips, commonly 3 to 6 inches wide, in base, wall and tall heights. They are cut down to the exact gap on site. Wall cabinet fillers match the height of the wall cabinets they sit beside.

2.2 Corner Fillers

In an inside corner, the cabinets on the two walls meet at a right angle. Without a filler on one or both sides, a drawer front or pull on one wall can hit the door or hardware on the other. A corner filler pushes the run out far enough for everything to clear. For corner cabinet options, see our guide to corner solutions, lazy Susans and blind corners.

2.3 Decorative Fillers

Decorative or overlay fillers carry a molded profile or a furniture-style detail. They are typically used at the end of an island or beside a range hood, where the filler is visible from across the room.

2.4 Appliance Panels

Appliance panels and finished end panels close off the exposed side of a cabinet run, frame a refrigerator, or finish the side of a dishwasher opening at the end of a run. They are wider and thicker than strip fillers and are usually fastened to the cabinet side and the floor or wall.

How to make a filler plan

A filler plan is the part of the cabinet layout that says where every filler goes and how wide it will be. Make it before you order so the right pieces arrive with the cabinets.

  1. Measure each wall at three heights: near the floor, at counter height and near the ceiling. Use the smallest measurement for the cabinet run.
  2. Lay out the cabinets in standard widths and note the leftover space on each wall.
  3. Put fillers where they do a job: at walls where doors need clearance, at inside corners, and next to appliances with handles that stick out.
  4. Split large leftovers. Rather than one wide filler, put a filler at each end of a run, or choose a different cabinet width so the filler stays narrow.
  5. Check door and drawer swing on paper: every door should open fully and every drawer should pull out past the hardware next to it.
  6. Add the filler, panel and molding pieces to the box list in the same door style and finish as the cabinets.

For accurate wall measurements, follow our kitchen cabinet measurement guide.

3. Tools and Materials Needed

Gather these before you start:

  • Tape measure, level and straightedge
  • Table saw or track saw for ripping fillers to width
  • Scribing compass or scribe tool and a pencil
  • Jigsaw, block plane or belt sander for cutting to a scribe line
  • Bar clamps or face-frame clamps
  • Drill-driver with a countersink bit
  • Cabinet or trim screws sized so they do not come through the face of the filler
  • Wood glue (optional, for filler-to-frame joints)
  • Filler strips, panels and touch-up materials that match the cabinet finish

4. Step-by-Step Installation Process

Install fillers as you set the cabinets, so the filler and the cabinet beside it go to the wall together.

Step 1: Measure the Gaps

With the cabinets dry-fit and level, measure the gap between the face frame and the wall or the next cabinet at the top, middle and bottom. If the three numbers differ, the wall is out of plumb and the filler needs to be scribed.

Step 2: Cut the Filler Strips

Rip the filler on a table saw or track saw to the widest measurement plus a little extra if you will scribe it. Cut it to length to match the face frame height. Keep the factory-finished edge on the side that meets the cabinet.

Step 3: Test Fit the Fillers

Hold the filler in place and check that it is flush with the face of the face frame and plumb. To scribe to a wall, set the compass to the widest gap, run it down the wall to transfer the wall’s shape onto the filler, then cut to the line with a slight back-bevel so only the front edge touches the wall. Our guide to cabinet scribing explains the technique in detail.

Step 4: Secure the Fillers

Clamp the filler flush to the side of the face frame. From inside the cabinet, pre-drill and countersink through the face frame edge into the filler, then drive screws at the top, middle and bottom. A thin bead of glue along the joint adds stiffness. When a filler sits between two cabinets, clamp the three pieces together and screw through one face frame into the filler, then through the other.

Step 5: Finish the Edges

Fill any visible marks with a color-matched touch-up product, clean off squeeze-out and check that doors and drawers on both sides open and close without rubbing. A small, color-matched caulk line is acceptable where a scribed filler meets a textured wall, but it should not be used to hide a large gap.

5. Tips for a Professional Finish

  • Keep fillers narrow. A wide filler looks like a mistake; change cabinet widths in the layout instead.
  • Match the finish exactly by ordering fillers with the cabinets in the same door style.
  • Keep the face of the filler flush with the face frame so nothing catches clothing or reveals the joint.
  • Check door clearance with the hardware installed, not before. Pulls often decide how wide a filler must be.
  • Mark filler locations on the wall before you set cabinets so the crew installs them in the right order.

6. Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Skipping the filler at a wall: A cabinet set tight to a wall can leave the door unable to open fully, or the drawer pulls scraping the wall.
  • No corner filler: Drawers on two walls hit each other’s hardware in the corner.
  • Measuring once: Older walls bow and lean. Measure at three heights before you rip.
  • Screws through the front: Face-nailing or screwing through the filler face leaves visible fasteners. Fasten from inside the cabinet.
  • Using caulk instead of scribing: A thick caulk line shows up and cracks over time.
  • Ordering fillers late: Fillers in a different batch or finish may not match. Put them on the original order.

Older homes in the Chicago area often have walls that are not plumb. Our guide to accounting for wall irregularities covers shimming and leveling the cabinets before fillers go on.

Fillers for CCC Cabinets face-frame cabinets

All 15 CCC door styles are face-frame cabinets with a 3/4″ birch face frame and full-overlay doors, so fillers attach to the side of the face frame exactly as described above. When you build the box list, include fillers, panels and molding in the same door style so the finish matches, and ask our team which pieces are available for your style. Popular styles include Pure White, Shaker Blue and Espresso Shaker; see every style in our cabinet collections.

Cabinets are stocked in Des Plaines and available assembled or ready-to-assemble, with warehouse pickup or jobsite delivery. Trade customers can open an account for project pricing.

7. Frequently Asked Questions

How do you attach a cabinet filler strip?

Rip the filler to the width of the gap, scribing it if the wall is uneven. Clamp it flush to the side of the cabinet’s face frame, then pre-drill and countersink from inside the cabinet through the face frame into the filler. Drive screws at the top, middle and bottom, using screws short enough that they do not come through the front.

What is the purpose of cabinet fillers?

Cabinet fillers close the gaps that standard cabinet widths leave against walls, appliances and other cabinets. They also create clearance, so doors can open fully and drawers can pull out past walls, trim and the hardware on neighboring cabinets, and they can be cut or scribed to fit walls that are not straight.

How wide should cabinet fillers be?

Make a filler as narrow as the job allows while still giving doors, drawers and hardware room to clear. Filler strips are commonly sold 3 to 6 inches wide and cut down on site. If a layout leaves a wide gap, change a cabinet width or split the space into a filler at each end of the run.

How do you install filler between a cabinet and the wall?

Set and level the cabinet first, then measure the gap to the wall at the top, middle and bottom. Rip the filler slightly wide, scribe it to the wall with a compass, and cut to the line with a slight back-bevel. Clamp it flush to the face frame and screw it from inside the cabinet.

What is a custom filler plan?

A filler plan is the part of a cabinet layout that shows where each filler goes and how wide it is. It is built from wall measurements taken at several heights and accounts for door swing, drawer clearance at corners and appliance handles. Making it before ordering ensures matching fillers arrive with the cabinets.

Do you need fillers on wall cabinets?

Usually yes, wherever wall cabinets meet a wall, a corner or a tall cabinet. Wall fillers line up with the base fillers below so the vertical lines of the kitchen stay consistent, and they let upper doors open past walls, range hoods and window trim. They are installed the same way as base fillers.

Can I install cabinet fillers myself?

A careful DIYer with a table saw, clamps and a drill can install simple fillers. Scribing to an uneven wall and making fillers line up across base and wall cabinets takes more practice, so many homeowners leave it to the cabinet installer. Most mistakes come from measuring only once and cutting too narrow.

Conclusion

Fillers are small pieces that decide whether a kitchen looks built-in. Plan them before you order, keep them narrow, scribe them to the wall and fasten them from inside the cabinet.
